SCHEDULE

Day 1

Arrival at Juan Santamaría International Airport in Costa Rica. Tourists will be transported to a hotel in San José for an overnight stay (dinner not included in the package).

Day 2

7:00 a.m. departure from San José, ascending the impressive Cerro de la Muerte (Death Mountain) to reach our first destination ninety minutes later: the Tree Activities Center, which has a primary forest of oak trees located in the Los Santos forest reserve.

Visitors can enjoy rock climbing to different heights of up to 40 meters, using a rope system supported by a harness and clamps. An experienced guide accompanies climbers one by one at all times. They may use the free fall system or rappel back down, in addition to the thrilling new “Rocket Man.”

We next go to another primary mixed tropical forest, where you will climb through hollow fig trees, viewing the unique landscape from the treetops and then rappelling down or, if you wish, descending through the inner part of the tree.

Lunch is served at the Savegre Waterfalls Restaurant, with dinner and lodging at the Toucanet Lodge.

Day 3

Breakfast at 7:00 a.m.; the tour continues an hour and a half later, observing the majestic Talamanca mountain chain shrouded in clouds, home to the Chirripo and Amistad parks., which represent two of the four Central American parks declared Biosphere Reserves and World Heritage Sites.

We then descend to the Valle General through vast fields of coffee, sugar cane and pineapple, up to a small, quaint village known as San Vito de Coto Brus. This tiny community still preserves the traditions of its original Italian residents, who immigrated to Costa Rica in 1953. Room and board are provided for the night at the cozy Cuenca de Oro Hotel.

Day 4

After breakfast, visitors tour the Cruces Biological Station for two hours with a knowledgeable guide. The main center in the area for teaching, research and environmental education, the Station is part of the Amistad Biosphere Reserve, which is the largest and most pristine park in Central America, located close to the Panamanian border.

Among the Reserve’s outstanding features are a huge array of rare plants in danger of extinction, with a collection of 700 palm varieties, a rich diversity of birds, mammals, and butterflies, and exquisite gardens.

We then continue our journey in the southernmost part of Costa Rica, passing through Neily City and Río Claro, to arrive in Golfito two hours later for lunch. Here we board the boat that will take us to Puerto Jiménez harbor, crossing the Golfo Dulce.

In the afternoon visitors take a short sea kayak tour by the Platanares River, where mangroves abound; a brief talk about their importance for the area is given, and visitors are shown how to extract coconut pulp without using any tools. After watching the sunset, we head to the Bosque Mar Cabins for dinner and lodging.

Day 5

A pleasant 8:00 a.m. bike tour by dirt and stone road following breakfast begins the day’s activities; during the 7 km. tour, we see a great variety of tropical birds before arriving at Rio Nuevo (New River) to rest and enjoy a snack.

We then return to Puerto Jiménez harbor, where the tour continues by minibus along the Osa Peninsula: at Palmar Sur. We visit the museum of Stone Spheres, which are among the greatest mysteries of archaeology; these spheres have captured the attention of scientists from all around the world.

At the Pacific Coast, we visit the Whale Marine National Park, where from a distance, the Whale and the Three Sisters Islands and their surroundings can be seen. The park protects a number of important habitats: tidelands, swamps, mangrove thickets, islands, rocky reefs, diverse kinds of beaches, the Uvita Tómbolo point, and the wondrous coral reef.

Lunch is served on the road to the rural Silencio Lodge, for dinner and an overnight stay, with a daytime tour planned for the morning.

Day 6

The tour of the Silencio Lodge cooperative will start following breakfast. The families of this remarkable community live modestly, producing basic grains and palm oil, raising cattle, and carrying out reforestation and projects to protect environment.

Visitors will see traditional cow milking, and then visit the Center for Wildlife Rescue, where non-traditional tourist products are offered to support the cooperative’s projects. We then trek back to the Savegre River basin, and then return to the lodge for lunch.

The tour then continues back to San José, viewing towns on the way, arriving after approximately four hours for dinner and lodging in the capital.

Day 7

A short visit or ride can be arranged for early hours on the last day, according to the departure time of the international flight.
